This project exists in a brand new building in Mission Bay, just two blocks from our main site on 7th & Townsend. Our San Francisco team is growing dramatically and it was time to consolidate a few old sites while incorporating more opportunities for growth. My role on this project was to manage the design, architecture, environmental graphics, and furniture procurement teams.
100 Hooper is the culmination of 2 years of workplace design research and strategy. This is the first large-scale project at Adobe to utilize all of the research and guidelines that we have been building. We also used persona-based research to more accurately determine various settings and work styles for employees.
Even though our main site is just a short walk away, we have included various amenities that complement our new urban campus. These amenities include a large cafe called Montage, a wellness center call Motion, and a coffee bar called Amp. We also have access to a brand new rood deck for Adobe community events. We have used the “Dynamic Duos” theme to tie both of our large sites together. We believe that this site meets and exceeds our goals of inclusive, seamless, inspiring, responsible, and flexible workspace. This is a place where Adobe employees will do the best work of their career and inspire the creative world with the tools that they create.

These design guidelines are the culmination of lessons learned, research, and ideas about the future of work. This document is ever-evolving and is released on the first Tuesday of every fiscal quarter. Maintaining and evolving this document helps to scale the global workplace design program. It also ensures that we deliver high-quality experiences to all Adobe employees. It was my role to create, maintain, and roll out the global workplace guidelines for all projects at Adobe.

The North tower in San Jose is an extension of our downtown campus. We aim to deliver a project that drives creativity. We will consider ourselves successful if we create space that enables and amplifies creativity. We aim to empower teams and individuals to adapt to their environment, in a community that fosters innovation. This will be the place where Adobe employees will do the best work of their careers. My role on the North Tower was to advise on architecture for the tower and interior workplace planning.

This vision for this project is to create a space that can accommodate growth, collaborative working environments, and innovation. This is an existing site that currently houses about 450 employees. The new project aims to reach 850 employees. The new space will include updated amenities which will create a hub of activity at the heart of the building. These amenities include a large cafe, wellness center and coffee bar. We will also include an interconnecting stair from the ground floor up to the roof deck.
The location of this site is right next to the river in Fremont. The building is in between two beautiful bridges which create a landmark for the growing tech community in this neighborhood. The design concept is to create lingering path like those found in nature to slow down the arrival into the workspace. This also helps to create moments of discovery, which keep the space feeling fresh and alive.
Our project goals are to create an inclusive, seamless, inspiring, responsible, and flexible space for Adobe’s employees to thrive.

This project is the second phase of a 3 phase master plan for our Lehi, Utah campus. We plan to add 1,000 Adobe employees to this site at the open in the summer of 2020. This design of this project will capture all of our recent workplace strategy research in order to deliver a robust complement to the first phase of this campus. We have designed a variety of unique landmarks in this project by collaborating with local and global artists to create unique installations of work.

Aperture is a product conceived by KEM Studio and Herman Miller. This product is aimed to greater enhance focus in open office environments. Adobe teamed up with KEM Studio and Herman Miller to further study this product and get it into production. After many months of review, we were able to release the first batch of Aperture desks at 100 Hooper, Adobe’s creative headquarters in San Francisco.
This collaboration was one of many Herman Miller + Adobe innovation projects. This also introduced KEM Studio to the Adobe family. Through this relationship, KEM Studio was also able to give insight into Lab82 and the various innovation projects related to the Adobe workplace program.

Lab83 is a place where we like to ask ‘why’. It’s a place to experiment, innovate, and explore what’s happening at the bleeding edge of collaborative workplace design. This is a place for teams to come together and solve difficult problems in a new way utilizing the latest workplace tools. We then scale out successes and re-look at failures and keep moving!
We have 3 core elements that we explore at Lab82; collaborative technology, furniture design, and biophilia. It was my responsibility to build the Lab82 program starting in 2016. We literally scrapped, begged, and pleaded for almost everything involved with Lab82 since it was so experimental. Over the course of 3 years, we were able to establish a budget for evolutionary builds each fiscal quarter. We were also able to leverage various partnerships through various projects at Lab82. There were many contributors to this space and the products we tested and explored. The successful products and experiments were rolled out to current workplace projects happening all over the world. This program was very successful in measuring what works and what doesn’t. It ultimately built a culture in the workplace program called “permanent beta”…everything is an evolving prototype. It allowed us to experiment and learn from failures very quickly.
The version of Lab82 being shown here is v3. We chose KEM Studio to work with us on design because of their ability to understand strategy, product, and architecture. They are industrial designers, which we feel was a missing link in thinking about workplace design. We decided to explore a concept called ‘Kiva’. This piece of furniture allowed the users to create flexible enclosed spaces while also allowing for technology to play a part. Kiva creates space and is also an armature for screens, whiteboards, acoustical sound-absorbing panels, and other collaborative devices. KEM Studio also proposed a series of tables that were all modular and could be re-arranged to accommodate 1-12 people all at one table.
The furniture is this evolution was designed by KEM Studio and made by Mash Studios, a partnership that evolved out other workplace projects. Herman Miller allowed us to test the Cosm chair as part of a pre-release program for their elite clients.
Biophilia is a topic we love to explore at Adobe. We have created a filter for architectural material selection which prioritizes biophilia; natural materials, recycled materials, biomimicry, plants, sounds, and aromas. Our flooring partner Interface created a custom carpet that evokes frozen ground and melting snow over soil. We also partnered with Biome and included 2 of their products in the space. Our technology partner was Microsoft, which allowed us to test various Surface Collaborative products.
We also explored sound, as we believe it plays an important role in how we work together. We created various ‘radio stations’ for different types of mood or work environments within Lab82.
To keep things chill, we provided an aromatherapy station for users to explore how aromas can enhance mood and environment.

The offices are located on the ‘Silicon Roundabout’ in London’s Tech City, a hive of innovation and the third-largest technology cluster in the world after San Francisco and New York City.
Specifically, our new home is in the White Collar Factory, a beautiful and cutting edge development by Derwent London, one of London’s most innovative office specialist property regenerators. Derwent London is well known for its design-led philosophy with sustainability at the heart of every development – a great match for Adobe.
We’ll take up the 7th, 8th and 13th floor of the 16-storey building which boasts high ceilings, abundant natural light and natural ventilation, thanks to concrete core cooling. And, as well as being a healthy place to work on the inside, there is plenty to do to keep fit and active with access to a roof terrace including a 150m running track and plenty of space to park our bicycles.
Our space is open plan, with meeting rooms, social hubs, a library, tech café and a games room. A major feature includes a ‘Customer Experience Centre’ – providing UK and European customers with an environment to experience our technology.
